The second half of the season could bring an important player back to the Comerica Park squad. Javier Báez has officially begun his rehab assignment in the Minor Leagues, and all signs point to his return to the Major League roster drawing ever closer.

His return is sparking an interesting debate within the organization. Beyond his name and experience, can Báez provide the boost Detroit needs for the home stretch, or should management still be looking for a high impact hitter before the trade deadline?

Before suffering the right ankle sprain that sent him to the injured list, the Puerto Rican had played in just 21 games during the 2026 season. During that span, he batted .256, hit two home runs, drove in six runs, and posted an OPS of .677 statistics from MLB.com that, on their own, do not fully reflect the value he can bring to the team.

However, his case cannot be analyzed solely based on those numbers. His recent track record shows that he is still capable of being a productive player. In 2025, he had his best offensive season since arriving in Detroit, batting .257, hitting 12 home runs, driving in 57 runs, and returning to the All-Star Game after regaining the consistency he had lost during his early years with the franchise.

Defense remains his strongest asset

If there’s one aspect that could make a difference in his return, it’s his defense. According to Baseball Savant, Báez posted a +7 Outs Above Average (OAA) and +8 Fielding Run Value (FRV) in 2026—two Statcast metrics that reflect the positive impact of his defense prior to his injury.

Furthermore, his ability to play shortstop, second base, third base, and even center field offers a level of versatility that few players on Detroit’s roster possess. That factor takes on even greater importance in the second half of the season, when every run prevented can be just as important as a run scored.

Does His Return Change Detroit’s Strategy?

Bringing back Javier Báez restores depth to the roster and reduces the need to seek out a player capable of covering multiple defensive positions. His presence allows the manager to make lineup adjustments with greater freedom and strengthen the defense in various game situations. However, that doesn’t mean Detroit should give up on bolstering its offense.
