MLB: Julio Urías and his future in the Major Leagues. From a star worth over $100 million to a minimum contract?
Mexican pitcher Julio Urías has not performed on the field since 2023; his physical condition will be a key factor in his desire to return to the sport of balls and strikes.

Mexican pitcher Julio Urías has not performed on the field since 2023; his physical condition will be a key factor in his desire to return to the sport of balls and strikes.
According to his agent, Scott Boras, several MLB teams have shown interest in Julio Urías, but he has not yet authorized any negotiations.
Mexican Julio Urías was projected to have one of the most outstanding careers among his compatriots in MLB; however, his off-field conduct led to his exclusion from the diamond after being punished by Major League Baseball authorities. So much so, that more than two years have passed without him being able to take the mound.
Right now, this Saturday, September 5, 2026, we update the outlook for the Mexican pitcher and what he might face in his future as he tries to reconnect with organizations in the Big Show. The left-handed Latino was arrested in 2019 for domestic vi*lence and was a repeat offender for the same reason in 2023. This incident not only tarnished his image but also impacted his future as a Major League player.
Upon learning that he had vi*lated the aforementioned code of conduct for the second time in Major League Baseball, the Los Angeles Dodgers announced in a statement that they had placed him on the Restricted List and subsequently released him. Thus ended the sensational run of a World Series champion.
Completely excluded from baseball, Julio Urías disappointed by authorities
Julio Urías had to face the consequences of his own actions. He waited for those interested in him to act, but to date, he hasn't even been able to consider a viable path back to the diamond.
Horacio de la Vega, president of the Mexican National Team Selection Committee, explained in May that due to the legal situation the pitcher faced, he would not be considered for the national team, much less for the summer or winter leagues in Mexico. The reason? The player has yet to resolve his legal status in the U.S. after receiving a 36-month probation sentence, 30 days of community service, and a 52-week counseling course, all of which expires in 2027.
Although the outlook seems bleak for the baseball player, all is not lost. He is not banned from MLB, so he has options to return to the Big Show; the only obstacles ahead are managerial hurdles, since no Major League team wants to be part of a deal involving an athlete suspended by the league.

His agent, Scott Boras, spoke about the situation in 2026, and Julio Urías' future is not uncertain regarding his possible return to MLB. Furthermore, the executive mentioned that there are options, but no action has been taken due to the pitcher's inactivity.
"I need my client's authorization to even talk about it and I still don't have it... Teams ask me about him all the time. With the current pitching market, Julio could play at any time. But I think it's about him deciding if it's something he wants to do right now," Scott Boras assured journalist Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times.
Julio Urias’ agent Scott Boras says he is currently weighing if he wants to make a return to baseball and that teams ask him about Urias all the time.

The big question: Is it worth signing Julio Urías?
The man who once had a lucrative 10-year, $300 million-plus contract on his way to becoming a free agent is no longer in that position. At one point (2023), an ESPN report even placed his salary somewhere between $200 million and the aforementioned figure.
Knowing that the Mexican pitcher hasn't performed well on the field since 2023, his biggest limitation is the physical condition he'll be in when he returns. Even if he recovers from that situation, there wouldn't be a single MLB club interested in offering him such a guaranteed deal.
The pitching market in the Majors presents a suitable opportunity where Julio Urías could attract the attention of some teams; however, he'll have to act quickly before making a move because it's projected as a high-risk acquisition. Currently, estimates suggest he'd only be eligible for a Minor League contract with the MLB minimum salary. While this might initially seem like a positive step, as it would mean returning to the system, going from a salary of $14 million, as reported by the Spotrac website, to $780,000 is a harsh dose of reality for the Mexican plaer.
If we consider a more challenging scenario for establishing a path to organized baseball in the U.S., Asian baseball will be considered one of the possible destinations he might have to accept, given the circumstances of Trevor Bauer's stint in Japan.
Who is Julio Urías?
He is a baseball player born on August 12, 1996, in Mexico. He signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2012 and made his professional debut in 2016. During the 2020 postseason, he won the World Series with the California team, and in his next two seasons, he was named to the MLB Second Team thanks to his performance on the mound. After eight years in the Major Leagues, he earned nearly $30 million before serving his suspension from the league.
