Yordan Alvarez ranks among the American League’s offensive leaders and is a strong candidate for the MVP award.

After widespread speculation regarding a potential trade before the deadline, that possibility appears to have been ruled out.

Yordan Alvarez and the Houston Astros are living two different realities despite being part of the same story. On one hand, the Cuban slugger is putting up MVP-caliber numbers; on the other, the "Sideral" squad began the day on May 13 sitting at the bottom of the American League West, 6.0 games out of first place.

Due to their current standing, many analysts and U.S. media outlets, such as MLB Network, discussed the possibility of the Cuban slugger being traded before the deadline to a team with better postseason prospects.

Houston Astros Rule Out Trade

Such a scenario seems unlikely, given that Alvarez is one of the pillars the franchise intends to build around to return to contention in the American League.

The probability of a trade between Houston and another MLB organization has now shifted from "unlikely" to "zero." At least, that is according to Will Kunkel, a TV host with experience at Fox Sports, who reported on his X account that Yordan Alvarez is not available.

"I am told Astros star Yordan Alvarez is 'NOT ON THE MARKET,' per a source. There have been ZERO calls of interest on Alvarez at this point. MLB Network had a full segment on the potential of the Astros trading Yordan Alvarez. Houston is 15-23 but just 4.5 GB of 1st place in the AL West," Kunkel stated.

MVP Numbers for Yordan Alvarez

In 38 games, Yordan Alvarez has tallied 13 home runs, ranking sixth in MLB, trailing only Kyle Schwarber (17), Aaron Judge (16), Byron Buxton (15) Munetaka Murakami (15), and Matt Olson (14). In the American League, he sits third in RBIs with 29, just four behind leader Jonathan Aranda.

His consistency is also reflected in his batting average, ranking fourth in the AL at .311, paired with a .615 slugging percentage and a 1.029 OPS. If he maintains this pace, the cuban star will firmly be in the MVP discussion and could break several of his personal records:

Home Runs: 37 (2022)

RBIs: 104 (2021)

Doubles: 35 (2021)

Batting Average: .313 (2019)

Hits: 170 (2025)

Meanwhile, the rest of the Astros' offense has struggled to match his production, with the exception of Christian Walker, who has hit nine home runs and produced 28 RBI.

It is still early in the season, and perhaps a prolonged losing streak could change the front office's vision. Will he remain in Houston?

Who is Yordan Alvarez?

Born in Las Tunas, Cuba, on June 27, 1997, Yordan Alvarez is undoubtedly the best Cuban hitter today and one of the most elite bats in the Big Leagues. Since his MLB debut with the Houston Astros in 2019, he has established himself as a premier slugger with nearly 200 career home runs (182), three All-Star selections, and a World Series ring from 2022.
