Burning Up the Majors: Esmerlyn Valdez Leads Pirates Over Phillies as Historic Surge Continues

The Pittsburgh Pirates delivered one of their most complete performances of the season, powered by Esmerlyn Valdez’s remarkable breakout and a dominant effort on both sides of the ball.
As Valdez’s historic rookie surge continues, Pittsburgh has gained a legitimate middle-of-the-order force, while Philadelphia searches for answers despite another milestone from Bryce Harper.
Citizens Bank Park once again bore witness to the explosive impact of baseball’s next generation. This time, however, there was no room for late-game drama.
The Pittsburgh Pirates completely derailed the Philadelphia Phillies with a commanding 6-1 victory on Wednesday night, backed by a furious 14-hit offensive onslaught and yet another masterclass from their sensational Dominican rookie, Esmerlyn Valdez.
With this win in their final head-to-head matchup of 2026, the Pirates managed to salvage some pride in the season series (finishing 2-5 against Philadelphia). More importantly, they leveled their overall record at 44-44, firmly holding their ground in the fiercely contested National League Central Division.
Meanwhile, the Phillies (49-39) took a tough blow, falling three full games behind the Atlanta Braves for the top spot in the NL East.

The Valdez Phenomenon: More Extra-Base Hits Than Singles
Slotted into the cleanup spot with total confidence by manager Derek Shelton, the San Cristóbal native shredded the local pitching staff. Valdez went 2-for-4 with a single, a run scored, and three crucial RBIs. The highlight of the night came when he laced his first career Major League triple—a loud statement that this kid is built for the big stage.
Since his MLB debut on May 22, Valdez’s numbers have left analysts speechless. In just 22 games in the Big Show, he is slashing an incredible .316 / .375 / .737. But the most staggering aspect of his offensive profile is his raw, unadulterated power:
The Power Split: Valdez has accumulated 11 extra-base hits (4 doubles, 1 triple, 6 home runs) compared to just 7 singles. Nearly 61% of his Major League hits are for extra bases.
Furthermore, his ability to drive in runs under pressure is skyrocketing. With his three RBIs on Wednesday, he reached 15 on the season, marking his third game with multiple RBIs in his last five contests—a stark contrast to the start of his year, when he drove in multiple runs just twice in his first 14 games.
"There was a situation early in the game with the bases loaded where I hit into a double play," Valdez told SportsNet Pittsburgh through an interpreter after the game. “I just told myself to keep a positive mindset, that there was still a lot of baseball left to be played, and that’s exactly what happened.”

Power Support and a Gem on the Mound
The Buccaneer offense wasn't a solo act. Second baseman Nick Gonzales (2-for-4) and fellow Dominican catcher Endy Rodríguez (3-for-5) provided plenty of insurance, launching solo home runs to break the game wide open.
On the mound, right-hander Jared Jones looked every bit like the ace of the future. Jones completely handcuffed the dangerous Philadelphia lineup, tying his season-high with 6 strikeouts and improving the Pirates’ record to 5-2 in games he starts.
Pittsburgh's pitching collective held the Phillies to a mere four hits and a single run—their lowest offensive output since June 22.
Bryce Harper Makes History in the Loss
The only bright spot for the 37,851 fans in attendance came courtesy of their resident superstar, Bryce Harper.
Despite his team's defensive and offensive collapse, Harper drove in the lone run for the home team, extending his personal RBI streak to eight consecutive games.
This is currently the longest active RBI streak in all of Major League Baseball this season. It also ties Harper's career-high (originally set with the Nationals in 2016) and represents the longest RBI streak by a Phillie since Trea Turner drove in runs in 10 straight games during the 2023 season.
Game Notes:
- Game Time: 3 hours and 2 minutes.
- Attendance: 37,851 fans.
- Venue: Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia, PA.
