Baseball can be a cruel game, but it also rewards those who refuse to quit.

At Swing Completo, we love tracking the rise of the next generation of superstars, and right now, Esmerlyn Valdez is demanding everyone's attention. The baseball world better start tuning in.

On Monday night at a packed Citizens Bank Park, the 39,791 fans in attendance expected to witness a routine Philadelphia Phillies victory. The home team jumped out early, scoring two runs in the first inning and three more in the third, building what looked like a comfortable 5-0 lead.

BOX SCORE

But the Pittsburgh Pirates had other plans. In an absolute slugfest, Pittsburgh mounted a thrilling comeback to defeat the Phillies 11-7, proving once again that they are the dangerous wildcard no one wants to face.

The Magic of the Five-Run Comeback

Entering Monday, the Pirates were a dismal 1-17 this season when trailing by five runs or more—their only other such victory coming against the Dodgers back on June 10.

However, this team has a knack for historic resilience. This win marked Pittsburgh’s second 5-run comeback before the All-Star Break, a feat the franchise hasn't achieved since 2005.

The turning point came in a spectacular 6-run fifth inning, an offensive explosion that chased Phillies starter Aaron Nola. It shouldn't come as a surprise; it marked the 32nd time this season that the Pirates have scored 4+ runs in a single inning, the most in all of Major League Baseball.

Esmerlyn Valdez is Rewriting the History Books

While the team performance was epic, the individual story of the night belongs to Dominican rookie Esmerlyn Valdez.

Valdez launched a crucial home run in the fourth inning to kickstart the Pirates' offense. With that blast, he extended his home run streak to four consecutive games, marking the longest streak of his young career. In doing so, Valdez tied the longest home run streak by a Pirates player over the last 20 seasons, joining a select group of just five other instances.

The last Pirate to hit a home run in five straight games was José Castillo in May 2006, right after Jason Bay concluded a legendary 6-game streak.

Even more impressive? Valdez has now tied the longest home run streak by a Pirates rookie in franchise history, joining Garrett Jones (2009) and Dick Stuart (1958). The young outfielder is transitioning from an exciting call-up into an absolute nightmare for MLB pitchers.

A Night of Milestones on Both Sides

The offensive fireworks didn’t stop with Valdez.

  • Endy Rodriguez (PIT): The young catcher launched his 4th home run of the season in the 9th inning to seal the victory. It sets a new career high for Rodriguez, surpassing the three homers he hit during his 2023 rookie campaign.
  • Jared Triolo (PIT): Triolo broke an active curse by hitting his first home run of the season. He entered Monday as one of only five players in MLB with at least 150 at-bats and zero home runs.
  • Brandon Marsh (PHI): Despite the loss, Marsh had a night to remember, recording his second multi-HR game of the season (and 4th of his career). He joins Kyle Schwarber as the only Phillies with multiple multi-HR games this year.
  • Bryce Harper (PHI): The superstar continued his red-hot stretch, hitting his 3rd home run over the last 5 games. It also extended his RBI streak to 5 straight games. More importantly, it marked Harper’s 12th career 20-home run season, tying him with Freddie Freeman for the second-most among active players, trailing only Giancarlo Stanton (14).

The Verdict from Swing Completo

This 11-7 battle in Philadelphia was a perfect snapshot of modern baseball: heavy analytics, elite power, and shifts in momentum that keep fans on the edge of their seats.

While the Phillies remain a powerhouse in the National League, just a bit behind the Atlanta Braves, the Pirates showed the baseball world that their young core—led by the surging bats of Latino talents like Valdez and Rodriguez—has the grit to fight back against the best. Those players are a great back up for the Paul Skenes and Bubba Chandler of Pittsburgh.
