MLB: Junior Caminero strengthens his MVP case: Can he overtake Yordan Alvarez?
Junior Caminero reached the 40-home run mark for the second consecutive year and could add to that total during the season's home stretch, while Yordan Alvarez is posting a dream slash line.

Junior Caminero reached the 40-home run mark for the second consecutive year and could add to that total during the season's home stretch, while Yordan Alvarez is posting a dream slash line.
Junior Caminero is one of the top favorites to win the American League home run title, but wresting the American League MVP award from Cuban player Yordan Alvarez will be a nearly impossible task.
With 15 or fewer games remaining in the Major League Baseball (MLB) regular season, Houston Astros star Yordan Alvarez is emerging as the top favorite to win the American League MVP award. However, Tampa Bay Rays All-Star third baseman Junior Caminero has entered the conversation, particularly because he could lead the league in both home runs and RBIs.
Junior Caminero could snatch the American League MVP award from Yordan Alvarez, and at this stage of the season, the discussion is entirely legitimate. In fact, the Dominican slugger recently hit his 40th home run of the season, a two-run shot in the ninth inning that secured a victory for Tampa Bay over Houston and clinched a playoff spot for the Rays. He currently leads the American League in home runs.
However, leading the league in home runs and RBIs does not guarantee the MVP award. Yordan Alvarez has a much stronger case because he is contending for the Triple Crown: in addition to his power production, he leads, or ranks near the top of, the league in batting average, home runs, and RBIs. It promises to be an electrifying finish to the season, given that just two weeks ago, the Cuban slugger had no serious rival for the coveted award.
What would have to happen for Junior Caminero to win the MVP award?
Maintaining or extending his lead in home runs and RBIs would be the first step; hitting his 40th home run would put him in an excellent position. Closing the gap with the Astros' left-handed slugger in batting average and OPS would also make his case much stronger. However, that is where the main challenge lies for "La Máxima": achieving a comparable or superior WAR. Voters tend to consider overall value, not just home runs and RBIs.
The team factor could be a huge help. Tampa Bay has already clinched a playoff spot, and it was Caminero who delivered the moment that sealed their qualification. Of course, it will also depend on "Air Yordan" cooling off or missing time due to his ankle injury. The Cuban player sat out Friday's game against the Rays after spraining his right ankle on Thursday. Several factors would need to align, but for now, the Astros slugger remains the frontrunner for the award.

If the season ended now, Yordan Alvarez would still be the favorite, especially given his bid for the Triple Crown. His offensive advantage at the moment is unrivaled. However, Caminero has turned this into a genuine MVP race. There is also a compelling narrative: he is a 23-year-old leading the American League in home runs who just sent his team to the playoffs with a walk-off hit. If he also finishes as the leader in RBIs, the voting could become much closer.
Yordan Alvarez could also pull away from the pack again, including Caminero
If there is one thing that stands out remarkably about the Astros slugger, it is his ability to produce at the plate in short order. The offensive streaks Yordan Alvarez has posted throughout his career are phenomenal. If he manages to return to action healthy, he is capable of maintaining, or even improving, his offensive pace. Should he do so, he would have no reason to worry about the MVP race.
Looking at Yordan Alvarez heading into the final weeks of the 2026 MLB season, I would expect a very productive stretch run, though likely without the monstrous pace he set in the first half. The issue is that his power production has cooled off; since the beginning of August, he has recorded just three home runs and 14 RBIs. We also need to monitor his physical condition over the coming days. Houston has 14 games left in the regular season, while Tampa Bay has 15 remaining. Both the Cuban and the Dominican will have little opportunity to significantly boost or improve their numbers.
Defense also factors into the MVP choice
Although defense carries significantly less weight when determining which player deserves the MVP award, it is still a factor to consider. There is a distinct difference here, as we are comparing two very different defensive profiles: Junior Caminero is a regular third baseman, whereas Yordan Alvarez is primarily a designated hitter who occasionally plays the outfield or first base.
Junior Caminero has played virtually the entire season at the hot corner, 146 games and 1,282.2 innings at the position, recording 18 errors and a .948 fielding percentage. We aren't talking about an elite defender just yet; he is far from spectacular and still commits a high number of errors. However, he possesses something Yordan cannot offer: the physical tools to be a competent defender at a demanding position, including a powerful arm.
My pick for the American League MVP award
As I mentioned earlier, a lot can still happen in the remainder of the regular season. But if I had to choose a favorite to win the MVP award in the Junior Circuit, my pick would be Yordan Alvarez. No matter how much Caminero might improve his offensive stats, I am almost certain he will finish well behind the numbers the Cuban is set to post. Furthermore, the difference in overall totals is minimal, with the Astros player actually holding a slight edge in most batting categories.
Recently, on Facebook, several ESPN Deportes experts debated the topic of Caminero and Yordan as MVP candidates. Analyst Enrique Rojas was among them, and he shared his take on the matter:
“I think the numbers Yordan Alvarez has put up still make him the overwhelming favorite, even if Junior Caminero were to win two legs of the Triple Crown, home runs and RBIs”.
On a personal level, this time I fully agree with the opinion of the Dominican journalist.
Who is Yordan Alvarez?
Yordan Alvarez was born on June 27, 1997, in the province of Las Tunas, Cuba. From his early days in the Cuban National Series, he demonstrated exceptional batting talent. However, he did not play in the domestic league for long. It was not until his 2019 Major League debut that he gained international recognition by winning the American League Rookie of the Year award.
Yordan Alvarez is currently in his eighth Major League season, having played exclusively for the Houston Astros. To date, he is a three-time All-Star. He won a World Series ring (2022) and a Silver Slugger Award that same year. Additionally, he was named the American League Championship Series MVP in 2021.
