The White Sox third baseman has put together a rare power-speed season, joining an exclusive group of third basemen in MLB history.
Vargas' name sits alongside three accomplished third basemen — Chipper Jones, Alex Rodriguez and José Ramírez — in a statistical club that has been remarkably difficult to enter.
Miguel Vargas has put together a breakout season in Chicago, one that has placed him in a statistical group featuring some of the most accomplished third basemen in Major League Baseball history.
The White Sox All-Star has shown an unusual combination of power, plate discipline, run production and speed throughout 2026. With five games remaining in the regular season, Vargas had 144 hits, 31 doubles, one triple, 33 home runs, 89 RBIs, 102 runs scored, 20 stolen bases and 97 walks, along with a .251/.363/.481/.843 slash line, according to MLB.com.
Those numbers alone are impressive, but the combination is what makes Vargas' season particularly notable.
Miguel Vargas joins Alex Rodriguez and José Ramírez
According to Stathead, Vargas has become just the third third baseman since 2000 to record at least 100 runs, 30 doubles, 30 home runs, 20 stolen bases and 95 walks in the same season.
The only other third basemen to reach those thresholds since the turn of the century were Alex Rodriguez, who did it with the Yankees in 2007, and Cleveland Guardians star José Ramírez, who reached the mark in 2018.
Rodriguez's 2007 season included 143 runs, 31 doubles, 54 home runs, 24 stolen bases and 95 walks.
Ramírez followed with 110 runs, 38 doubles, 39 home runs, 34 stolen bases and 106 walks in 2018.
Vargas has now added his name to that list, doing so during what has been by far the most productive offensive season of his major-league career.
The magnitude of his power surge is especially striking when viewed against his previous production. Vargas entered 2026 with 29 career home runs over his first four MLB seasons. He has surpassed that total by himself this year.

Only Chipper Jones did it before 2000
The historical company gets even more impressive when the search is expanded beyond the 21st century.
Before 2000, only one third baseman had produced the same combination of numbers in a single MLB season: Hall of Famer Chipper Jones.
Jones accomplished the feat for the Atlanta Braves in 1999, finishing that season with 116 runs, 41 doubles, 45 home runs, 25 stolen bases and 126 walks.
That means that, dating back to 1871, only four third basemen have combined at least 100 runs, 30 doubles, 30 home runs, 20 stolen bases and 95 walks in a single season:
Chipper Jones, Alex Rodriguez, José Ramírez and Miguel Vargas.
That does not put Vargas on the same career level as the Hall of Fame third basemen who came before him. Players such as Mike Schmidt, Eddie Mathews, Wade Boggs, George Brett, Adrián Beltré and Jones built extraordinary careers over many seasons.
But for one season, Vargas has accomplished something remarkably rare.
Can Miguel Vargas sustain this level?
The next question is whether Vargas can turn this breakout into a sustained level of production.
The jump he has made in 2026 is significant. His power-speed combination and .363 on-base percentage have been major parts of his offensive value, while his bat speed has also improved considerably. At the same time, he has maintained a relatively low strikeout rate and continued to show strong plate discipline.
Vargas was also selected to his first All-Star Game this season after the White Sox committed to keeping him at third base.
Still, consistency remains the biggest question.
Before this breakout campaign, Vargas had a career slash line of just .204/.294/.356, a .651 OPS entering 2026. That makes it reasonable to wonder how much of his current production he can carry into future seasons.
At the same time, the underlying changes in his game have already produced tangible results. If Vargas continues to pair his plate discipline with power and speed, another 30-homer season and 15-plus stolen bases in 2027 would not be out of reach.
Vargas has found a home in Chicago
Another factor behind Vargas' breakout has been his comfort level since joining the White Sox.
After hitting his 30th home run of the season, Vargas spoke with White Sox reporter Connor McKnight, in an interview published by White Sox on CHSN.
“It feels great, especially playing at home in front of these fans. It means a lot to me.”
Vargas' connection with Chicago has coincided with the most productive season of his career. Whether that relationship continues for years to come remains to be seen, but his emergence has given the White Sox another important piece to build around.
Who is Miguel Vargas?
Miguel Vargas was born Nov. 17, 1999, in Havana, Cuba. He is the son of former Cuban national team player Lázaro Vargas and developed much of his baseball career in Cuba before moving into professional baseball in the United States.
Vargas made his MLB debut with the Los Angeles Dodgers on Aug. 3, 2022. After beginning his career in Los Angeles, he moved to the Chicago White Sox in 2024 and has since continued to develop as a power hitter and run producer.
His 2026 season represents a significant step forward and has transformed him from a player still searching for consistency into one of the more productive third basemen in the American League.
