Two of the most complete players to ever take the field in Major League Baseball are Barry Bonds and Mike Trout. While Trout remains active at the highest level, he shares a historic statistical distinction with MLB’s all-time home run leader.

Both Barry Bonds and Mike Trout are regarded as extraordinarily complete and dominant players. They combined tremendous power with elite on-base ability and contributed plenty of value on the bases, particularly during the best years of their careers. Both also played the outfield and had stretches in which they were considered elite defenders.

Between them, Bonds and Trout have won 10 MVP Awards — seven for the legendary left-handed slugger and three for the Los Angeles Angels superstar. That alone speaks to the statistical dominance they displayed in their primes, when both routinely performed well above league average across virtually every offensive category. They stood out as five-tool players, combining hitting ability, power, speed, defense and arm strength. Those similarities helped produce a statistical combination that is virtually unmatched in MLB history.

Barry Bonds finished his career with 762 home runs, 514 stolen bases and a 182 OPS+. Those numbers sound almost impossible, but they are very real — and only Bonds has ever reached that combination in MLB.

On a smaller scale, but still with remarkable numbers, Mike Trout has 423 home runs, 222 stolen bases and a 168 OPS+. The gap between the two is significant, but “Kiiiiid” is the only player who can claim to share this exclusive statistical territory with the all-time home run king.

According to Stathead, they are the only two players in MLB history with at least 400 home runs, 200 stolen bases and an OPS+ above 160.

Another 13 players reached at least 400 home runs and 200 stolen bases during their Major League careers, but none of them posted an OPS+ of 160 or higher. The closest to reaching that mark were Willie Mays and Hank Aaron, who each finished with a 155 OPS+.

These two extraordinary players came remarkably close to overlapping on a Major League field. Barry Bonds played his final season in 2007, while Mike Trout made his MLB debut four years later, in 2011. Even without sharing the field, however, both left an enormous mark on their respective eras — albeit in somewhat different ways.

The left-handed slugger was particularly dominant during the late 1990s and 2000s. His combination of power, plate discipline and ability to reach base made him one of the most feared hitters the game has ever seen. In 2001, he set the single-season MLB home run record by hitting 73.

Mike Trout, meanwhile, emerged as the defining star of the 2010s and the early 2020s. At his peak, he was an extraordinarily well-rounded player who won three American League MVP Awards and consistently performed at an elite level across virtually every facet of the game.

The biggest distinction is that Bonds became a historically dominant hitter in a way few, if any, players have ever matched. His 500-home run, 500-stolen-base combination is a benchmark that could stand for generations in MLB.

For now, the Angels star remains active and continues to add to what has already become one of the most remarkable statistical careers in baseball history.
