William Contreras has capped a remarkable 2026 season by cementing his place among baseball’s elite. After helping the Milwaukee Brewers defeat the Tampa Bay Rays to win the first World Series championship in franchise history, the Venezuelan catcher secured a $50,000 contractual bonus for being named World Series MVP.
According to contract information reported by Spotrac, the bonus brings Contreras’ total earnings for the 2026 season to $9.5 million. For Milwaukee, the additional payment represents a worthwhile investment in a player whose contributions proved decisive on baseball’s biggest stage.
Contreras also made history by joining fellow Venezuelans Jackson Chourio, Ángel Zerpa and Antonio Senzatela among the players from his country who have won both the World Baseball Classic and a World Series championship.

William Contreras Dominates at the Plate and Behind It
Contreras’ selection as World Series MVP was the result of an outstanding performance on both sides of the ball during Milwaukee’s five-game victory over Tampa Bay.
Offensive production: Contreras posted a .381/.435/.429 slash line, collecting eight hits in 21 at-bats while driving in four runs and striking out just once. According to CBS Sports, he also became the 27th player in Major League history to record multiple hits in each of the first three games of a World Series.
Defensive impact: Behind the plate, Contreras played a key role in limiting Tampa Bay’s running game, throwing out four of nine runners who attempted to steal a base.
Mastery of the ABS challenge system: In MLB’s first season using the Automated Ball-Strike (ABS) challenge system, Contreras demonstrated exceptional command of the technology. He successfully overturned 10 of the 13 calls he challenged, turning several pitches initially ruled balls into crucial strikes for Milwaukee’s pitching staff.
After the championship, Contreras spoke confidently about his standing among the league’s catchers while making clear that he did not intend to disrespect his peers.
“I don't want to offend any of the other catchers in the league. The last thing I want to do is offend any of them,” Contreras said through an interpreter. “But here I am today, a world champion, and I feel like I'm the best catcher in the league. Again, that's not meant as a lack of respect for any of them. That's the last thing I want to do. But today, I feel like I'm the best catcher in the world.”
The performance reinforced his value as one of the most complete catchers in the game, combining offensive production, defensive execution and the ability to guide a pitching staff through high-pressure situations.
A Historic Achievement for Contreras and Venezuelan Baseball
By winning the Willie Mays World Series MVP Award, Contreras became the eighth catcher in MLB history to receive the honor. He was also the first catcher to win the award since fellow Venezuelan Salvador Perez earned it in 2015.
His work behind the plate was particularly important to Milwaukee's championship run. Contreras helped guide the pitching staff and bullpen while limiting the Rays' ability to generate offense and manufacture runs throughout the series.
The championship also added another milestone to Contreras' career and strengthened his legacy in Venezuelan baseball. He joined Jackson Chourio, Ángel Zerpa and Antonio Senzatela in the group of Venezuelan players who have won both the World Baseball Classic and a World Series ring.
Beyond the historical significance, his performance could strengthen his position in future contract negotiations. The trade that brought Contreras to Milwaukee in 2022 has become one of the franchise's most successful acquisitions in recent years.

Who Is William Contreras?
William Contreras is a Venezuelan catcher for the Milwaukee Brewers and the MVP of the 2026 World Series. Born on Dec. 24, 1997, in Puerto Cabello, Carabobo, Venezuela, he comes from a baseball family. His older brother, Willson Contreras, is also an established Major League catcher.
Atlanta signed William Contreras as an international free agent in 2015, and he made his MLB debut in 2020. He was part of the Braves' World Series championship team in 2021 before joining Milwaukee in a three-team trade in late 2022.
Since arriving in Milwaukee, Contreras has established himself as one of baseball's most productive and well-rounded catchers. His résumé includes three All-Star selections, two Silver Slugger Awards and, now, a World Series championship and MVP honor.
His 2026 postseason performance added another defining chapter to his career. By delivering at the plate, controlling the running game and helping guide Milwaukee's pitchers, Contreras played a central role in the franchise's first championship.
For the Brewers, his $50,000 MVP bonus is a fitting reward for a player whose impact extended well beyond the box score. For Contreras and Venezuelan baseball, the award represents another milestone in an already memorable year.
