The Cuban contingent finished the regular season with 17 position players and 14 pitchers. Yordan Alvarez led the offensive production with 42 home runs and a 1.033 OPS, while Aroldis Chapman finished with 35 saves and a 1.92 ERA. An analysis of the records available on Baseball Reference also helps identify where Cuba made the biggest impact in Major League Baseball.
The 2026 MLB season featured outstanding performances from Cuban-born players, but also difficult campaigns for several veterans and players still looking to establish themselves in the Major Leagues.
A total of 31 Cuban-born players appeared during the regular season, including 17 position players and 14 pitchers. The group featured established stars such as Yordan Alvarez, Randy Arozarena and Aroldis Chapman, as well as young players who made their MLB debuts during the year, including Lázaro Montes, Raynel Delgado, Kendry Rojas and Yunior Tur.

The Houston Astros designated hitter finished the season as Cuba's leading offensive performer. Alvarez captured the American League batting title with a .316 average, hit 42 home runs, drove in 106 runs and posted a 1.033 OPS. He also accumulated 6.8 WAR, according to Baseball Reference, the highest mark among the 17 Cuban position players.
Miguel Vargas also put together an outstanding season with the Chicago White Sox. He hit 33 home runs, drove in 93 runs and stole 22 bases, finishing with an .837 OPS and 5.4 WAR. Randy Arozarena, meanwhile, combined 26 home runs with 26 stolen bases and posted an .865 OPS for the Seattle Mariners.

The offensive numbers provide a broader picture of Cuba's performance: the 17 players combined for 203 home runs, 649 RBIs, 1,146 hits and 83 stolen bases.
The five leading home run hitters, Alvarez, Vargas, Arozarena, Andy Pagés and Yandy Díaz, accounted for 146 home runs, representing 71.9% of the total. They also drove in 448 of the team's 649 runs, or approximately 69%.
That distribution reveals a significant concentration of offensive power. Home run production was not evenly spread across all 17 players; instead, a relatively small group carried much of the offensive workload.
Aroldis Chapman dominated the bullpen while Adrián Morejón led the pitching staff
The 14 Cuban pitchers produced widely different results. Chapman was one of the most effective relievers in the American League, recording 35 saves and a 1.92 ERA for the Boston Red Sox. Raisel Iglesias continued to serve as the closer for the Atlanta Braves, finishing with 34 saves and a 2.55 ERA.
Adrián Morejón also stood out with the San Diego Padres. He recorded nine wins, 107 strikeouts and a 2.83 ERA across 86 innings. His ability to generate strikeouts while limiting opposing offenses made him one of the most productive arms in the Cuban contingent.
Here are the final statistics for the 14 Cuban pitchers:
| Player and Team | G | W-L | IP | K | SV | ERA | WHIP |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Adrián Morejón — Padres | 76 | 9-3 | 86.0 | 107 | 3 | 2.83 | 1.081 |
| Aroldis Chapman — Red Sox | 53 | 3-4 | 51.2 | 71 | 35 | 1.92 | 1.123 |
| Raisel Iglesias — Braves | 59 | 1-2 | 60.0 | 64 | 34 | 2.55 | 1.083 |
| Yennier Cano — Orioles | 68 | 4-3 | 49.2 | 45 | 3 | 2.90 | 1.067 |
| Víctor Mederos — Braves | 30 | 6-1 | 34.1 | 34 | 1 | 3.41 | 1.194 |
| Orlando Ribalta — Nationals | 45 | 1-2 | 43.0 | 42 | 2 | 3.77 | 1.209 |
| Kendry Rojas — Twins | 12 | 1-1 | 29.2 | 34 | 0 | 3.34 | 1.517 |
| Cionel Pérez — Mets | 40 | 4-3 | 45.1 | 44 | 0 | 4.76 | 1.456 |
| Franco Alemán — Guardians | 21 | 0-1 | 22.1 | 28 | 0 | 4.43 | 1.567 |
| Johan Oviedo — Red Sox | 1 | 0-0 | 3.2 | 3 | 0 | 9.82 | 1.909 |
| Lázaro Estrada — Blue Jays | 8 | 1-1 | 13.0 | 9 | 1 | 5.54 | 1.385 |
| Yariel Rodríguez — Blue Jays | 10 | 0-1 | 9.1 | 6 | 0 | 7.71 | 2.036 |
| Yunior Tur — Athletics | 8 | 0-0 | 12.2 | 14 | 0 | 16.34 | 2.842 |
| Luis Morales — Athletics | 5 | 0-2 | 16.0 | 13 | 0 | 13.50 | 2.563 |
The table shows that pitching production was also concentrated among a small group. Chapman and Iglesias combined for 69 of the 79 saves recorded by Cuban pitchers, accounting for 87.3% of the total. Morejón, meanwhile, led the group in both innings pitched and strikeouts.
Command was another important factor. Yennier Cano finished with a 2.90 ERA and a 1.067 WHIP, while Morejón recorded 107 strikeouts in 86 innings. On the other end of the spectrum, Yunior Tur and Luis Morales struggled to limit baserunners and prevent runs.
What do the final statistics reveal?
Beyond individual performances, the end of the season highlights three statistical trends. The combined individual WAR total for the 17 position players, according to Baseball Reference, was approximately 26.3. Alvarez, Pagés, Arozarena and Vargas accounted for 23.9 of that total. That represents nearly 91%, illustrating just how heavily the overall production of Cuban position players depended on this quartet.
On the pitching side, the 14 Cuban arms combined for 477 innings, 514 strikeouts and 79 saves. The gap between the most effective pitchers and those who struggled was considerable, showing that having 14 representatives did not necessarily translate into consistent performance across the board.
Cuba had players capable of producing at an elite level in MLB, from Alvarez's bat to Chapman's arm, but the overall impact depended on a relatively small group. For the young players who made their debuts in 2026, the next challenge will be turning that first experience into sustained production. For the veterans, it will be about maintaining a level of performance capable of meeting the demands of another Major League season.
