For Cuban baseball player José Iglesias, reaching Major League Baseball was not only the fulfillment of a personal dream. It also meant keeping a promise and making the wish of someone fundamental in his life come true: his father.

The standout shortstop and singer recalled on the GOAT Podcast that when the time came to make the jump to professional baseball, he received an offer that was financially better than the one from the Boston Red Sox. However, when it was time to make his decision, he put family feelings ahead of money. His connection with his father meant more than any financial figure.

“I signed with the Boston Red Sox, but I had an even bigger offer from another team,” Iglesias explained while recalling that chapter of his career. “I called Cuba, and my father, who was a huge fan of Luis Tiant and Ted Williams, told me, ‘Boston Red Sox.’”

His father's response ultimately tipped the scales. The young player accepted his request, even though it meant turning down a significant amount of money. None of that was more important than following the wishes of the man who raised him.

“Honestly, I left a lot of money on the table to please my father,” he confessed.

The relationship between José Iglesias and Boston Red Sox began long before his Major League debut. The Cuban infielder was signed by the organization in 2009 and quickly became one of the most intriguing prospects in its system.

With Boston, the Cuban recorded 102 hits in 348 official at-bats, good for a .293 batting average. His offensive production included 16 doubles, three triples, three home runs and 28 RBIs.
